Important Call to Action Information
Novelty Lighter legislation signed into law by Governor Cuomo
The Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York would like to inform our members that the joint effort to ban the sale of novelty lighters in the State has resulted in the signing of the proposed legislation. As a top priority listed in the Issues of United concern, efforts by the Association, State Chiefs and FASNY has resulted in a law which will ban the sale and distribution of lighters which mimic toys and are attractive to children. In the near future, the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services will establish a toll free number to receive information from the public about suspected violations of this new law. Violations of the law can result in civil penalties to manufacturers or importers, distributors, retailers and those in possession of such lighters. See the full text of this law at: http://public.leginfo.state.ny.us/menugetf.cgi and type in A1011 in the text box.
In time with annual Fire Prevention Week the Association of Fire Districts would like to thank all of our fire service partners and supporters in the legislature especially sponsor Senator Martins and Assemblyman Dinowitz who helped influence the passage of this legislation that works to keep our children and grand-children safe.
